It&#8217;s this really interesting exercise in choosing key figures from (American) history and kind of writing their mythologies. But it&#8217;s the way he does it that&#8217;s worth noting.<\/p>\n<p>2. I often go back to Milan Kundera&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Book_of_Laughter_and_Forgetting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Book of Laughter and Forgetting,<\/a>&#8221; just to see how much you can do in compact spaces.<\/p>\n<p>3. Joanne Beard&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Boys-Youth-Ann-Beard\/dp\/0316085251\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boys of My Youth<\/a>.&#8221; is another gem.<\/p>\n<p>4. John Steinbeck\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Travels-Charley-Search-America-Steinbeck\/dp\/0140053204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Travels with Charley in Search of America<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>5.
