For 15 years, the photojournalist worked with <strong>San Jose Mercury News<\/strong>, but he collaborated with newsrooms and educational institutions all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>Richard was one of the first photographers and multimedia artists who created an <strong>Instagram <\/strong>account.\u00a0 His <strong>iPhone street photography<\/strong> was included in art galleries and published in a photo book edited by <strong>National Geographic<\/strong>, named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/iPhone-Fotografie-Carsten-Peter\/dp\/386690276X\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1355463824&amp;sr=1-1\">iPhone-Fotografie<\/a>. The surrounding space is so vast that it becomes increasingly difficult to keep a balanced grip on one&#8217;s own being. The mind swells out to fill the entire landscape, becoming so diffuse in the process that one loses the ability to keep it fastened to the physical self. The sun would rise from the eastern horizon, and cut it&#8217;s way across the empty sky, and sink below the western horizon. This was the only perceptible change in our surroundings. And in the movement of the sun, I felt something I hardly know how to name: some huge, cosmic love. I really don\u2019t see it any differently than a photographer who carries a few bodies with them on assignment. Not to mention, they range in model and actually have very different characteristics,\u201d Hernandez explained.<\/p>\n<p>As of recently, Richard added the <strong>Google Glasses<\/strong> to his camera kit. \u201cYou can call me a Glasshole, I don\u2019t really care, because <strong>having a camera basically mounted near my eye that snaps when I wink is just fucking awesome<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, we are in the midst of a <strong>dramatic revolution<\/strong> regarding how we <strong>create and consume <\/strong>information. But disappointingly, much of the conversation has been focused on the device and the use of faux nostalgic filters rather than on how photographers can choose from a wide range of possibilities to be creative\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Don\u2019t be taken aback by the apparent competition:<\/strong> \u201cPhoto apps won\u2019t magically give Jane the smartphone photographer a better sense of composition, or lighting, or framing. The apps and filters only change a photo\u2019s look and aesthetic feel. That doesn\u2019t make it a better photo. If you put lipstick on a pig, it\u2019s still a pig\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ajr.org\/2014\/04\/04\/future-visual-storytelling-richard-koci-hernandez-uc-berkeley\/\"><strong>Don\u2019t worry about being original<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cTake the weight off your students\u2019 shoulders that they have to create something new. There\u2019s nothing new. Every story\u2019s been done\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Throw yourself into your work<\/strong>: \u201cStart where you are with reckless abandon. Work-life balance is overrated; just go down the rabbit hole and stay there\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Practice your craft<\/strong>: \u201cIf you aren\u2019t shooting or practicing every day, you\u2019ll fall behind so quickly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Learn design<\/strong>: \u201cI don\u2019t care how good your story is; if you wrap a diamond in a newspaper \u2014 something that\u2019s kind of crappy and doesn\u2019t look so good \u2014 people will ignore it, but you could put something terrible in a blue tiffany box and people would be like, \u2019Oh, my god.\u2019 We need to marry things so the outside and the inside are beautiful\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TIME magazine named Richard one of the most popular photojournalists on the social network, with over 225,000 followers.\u00a0 When he\u2019s not publishing photo essays in Wired, The New York Times or National Geographic, Hernandez teaches New Media at the prestigious Berkley University\u2019s Journalism School, has workshops at Stanford University or master classes at TEDTalks.
