2017 speakers lineup

Now that registration is open, have another look at the incredible lineup of storytellers coming to Bucharest on October 20-21 and book your spot as soon as possible.


Elie Gardner is a freelance photojournalist and filmmaker based in Istanbul. Her work on immigration, women’s rights and education has taken her from Afghanistan, to Zimbabwe and up and down the Western Balkan migration route.

 

Finbarr O’Reilly is a renowned photojournalist who won the 2006 World Press Photo contest and was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. His upcoming book Shooting Ghosts: A U.S. Marine, a Combat Photographer, and Their Journey Back from War comes out August 22.

 

Jacqui Banaszynski is a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter and esteemed teacher, whose career spans 40 years and seven continents. This will be her seventh time at The Power of Storytelling. 

 

Jenna Pirog is the Virtual Reality Editor at The New York Times Magazine. She produced The Times‘ first virtual reality film, The Displaced, which won a World Press Photo Innovative Storytelling award.

 

Mindy Fullilove is a psychiatrist, teacher, and author who explores the ties between environment and mental health. One of her recent books, Urban Alchemy, takes readers on a tour of successful interventions that repair cities and reconnect communities. 

 

Murray Nossel is an Academy Award nominated documentary film maker and teacher of narrative medicine who, along with Paul Browde, co-created and stars in the unscripted show Two Men Talking.

 

Nikole Hannah-Jones is an award-winning investigative reporter at The New York Times Magazine covering racial injustice and segregation. Nikole is currently writing a book on school segregation entitled The Problem We All Live With.

 

Pat Walters is an editor at Gimlet Media, a podcasting start-up taking the media world by storm, as well as a former Radiolab producer and senior editor of Pop-Up Magazine. This year will be his third trip to Romania for The Power of Storytelling.

 

Paul Browde is a psychiatrist, teacher of narrative medicine and performer in the acclaimed unscripted show Two Men TalkingHe trained as an actor at Drama Studio London and he’s the co-founder of the storytelling company Narativ Inc.

 

Sarah Stillman is a staff writer at The New Yorker and 2016 MacArthur Fellow who writes about immigration, conflict zones and criminal justice reform. She won a National Magazine Award in 2012 for her reporting on abuses of war-zone workers.

 

Thomas French is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, writer and teacher, who has taught at the Poynter Institute for more than 25 years. He has led narrative workshops across the U.S. and around the world, from the Nieman Conference at Harvard University, to newsrooms in Dubai, Singapore and Johannesburg.
